You’re finally a project Manager! Now what? Transitioning into the role of project leader

I always wanted to be a project manager. Now that I have my big break, how do I make sure I don’t blow it? How do I transition from individual contributor to being a leader among my peers? How do I convince my team to listen to a shiny new project manager, and how do I get my sponsors and stakeholders to trust that I will deliver? In this 50 - 55 min presentation followed by a 25 - 30 min panel discussion, our hosts will share their experience and specific techniques that can help you with a successful transition from your old role to that of a project leader.

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

1. Understand techniques for managing the transition from being an individual contributor on a team to leading a team

2. Understand techniques for gaining buy-in and support from a new project team

3. Understand techniques for gaining trust from new stakeholders and sponsors

Kate Anderson

You might know me from my podcast, PM Happy Hour! Happy to meet you, I'd love to hear more about you and what you're working on. Day to day, my specialty is bringing the rubber to meet the road: I love facilitating cross functional teamwork when it's really ambiguous and messy and no one knows how to bring a vision to life. I inspire others to join the effort, create accountability to each other, and am excited for what we can create together.

I'm currently at PayPal in the Technology Leadership Program, a 2 year rotation program with 4 six-month rotations. I'm also co-hosting my podcast, PM Happy Hour, nerding out about project management techniques, good communication and ppm tools with Kim Essendrup.
