Deliver the Results the First Time Through Effective Leadership Communication

Few things annoy most business people more than having to needlessly re-do work. It usually happens because of a breakdown in communication and it costs most companies a lot in terms of time, energy, employee motivation, and lost sales. There is a way, however, to deliver results the first time and avoid the most common causes of project failure and the pitfalls of miscommunication.

We will Define the “Afters.” Often times what people really want isn’t the task itself but the “afters” – the benefits they believe they will receive “After” the task is completed. A case in point: People buy toothpaste because they like how it cleans their teeth, not usually because they love toothpaste. Start getting to the “Afters” by asking “future-based” questions to get answers that focus on results and deliverables.

Examples include:
- “What are you looking to achieve?”
- “What are your goals with this?”
- “If you could give your colleagues two or three things from this, what would they be?”
